Emergency Food & Shelter Program (EFSP)

Are you or someone you know in danger of being evicted from your apartment or home? Or perhaps, you have already been evicted and are currently homeless and do not know where to go for help. Do you need help obtaining food for yourself or your family?  Then please dial 211 or text your zip code to #898-211 to talk with an operator for free, anytime day or night.  EFSP does not provide assistance directly to individuals.

The Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) began in 1983 and was created by Congress to help meet the needs of hungry and homeless people throughout the United States and its territories by allocating federal funds for the provision of food and shelter.  That legislation created a National Board, chaired by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) that consisted of representatives of the American Red Cross, Catholic Charities USA, The Jewish Federations of North America, National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA, The Salvation Army and United Way Worldwide.

Nationally, the United Way administers the program, and locally, the Lycoming County United Way administers the program for Lycoming County.

EFSP funds are distributed through a competitive application process, and are used to provide served meals or emergency groceries, lodging in shelters or hotels, and emergency rent and mortgage assistance, foreclosure prevention and utility assistance.
