Christy Crouse, regional director of the Dollywood Foundation, was the featured speaker at the United Way Women’s Leadership Council Regional Meeting held Wednesday at the Williamsport YWCA. Crouse’s visit was in conjunction with the United Way led initiative to bring the benefits of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library to pre-school youngsters in Lycoming County.

WLC june 5 “For the past few years we have been collaborating with other United Way organizations in the Susquehanna River Region to establish the Women’s Leadership Council. Through these efforts we have identified early childhood education as a priority human service need throughout the region,” explained Scott N. Lowery, Lycoming County United Way executive director.

“With an expressed goal to better prepare youngsters for entry into the school systems the WLC will be working with the Dolly Parton Imagination Library to introduce the world of reading to pre-school youngsters. Participating youngsters will receive age-appropriate books mailed directly to their homes each month. Through this program hundreds of youngsters will be introduced to the world of reading, while at the same time strengthening the parent/child relationship,” Lowery added.

At the event, sponsored by FNB Wealth Management, Crouse shared the story of Dolly Parton’s inspiration for starting the program in the very rural, poverty stricken area of her Kentucky home, which has now grown to include pre-school youngsters across the country.

The United Way Women’s Leadership Council of the Susquehanna River Region is part of an initiative of United Way Worldwide to mobilize the caring power of women throughout the world. Women who donate individually, or as a couple, $500 or more to their local United Way are included among the 45,000 other women across the globe in 125 WLC groups supporting the community building efforts of local United Ways.
